The real message, with personal details covered.

What happens

Scammers email people pretending to be the police and accuse them of serious crimes. They demand a reply within 48 hours and use an attached file to steal details or money.

Warning signs

  • Police name, strange email address The email says 'Valsts policija' but comes from an unrelated business address ending in .com.ar (Argentina), not a Latvian police address.
  • Shocking accusations It accuses you of serious crimes against children to scare you so you stop thinking clearly.
  • 48-hour deadline You are told to respond within 48 hours and that the time limit will not be extended, which is pressure.
  • Threats of arrest It threatens handing your case to prosecutors and asking a court to have you detained if you do not answer.
  • Suspicious attached file The PDF with an odd name ('UTF-8''Oficiāla VP pavēste.pdf') may hold a harmful link or ask for your details.
  • Police don't work this way Real police do not announce a criminal case by email and ask you to send an explanation to a stranger. The email also has no case number and no named officer.

How this scam works

  1. Criminals send thousands of emails pretending to be the police, with frightening accusations.
  2. They give a short deadline so that you panic and do not talk to anyone.
  3. The attached file or a reply leads you to give personal details, pay a 'fine', or install a harmful program.
  4. Some scammers then threaten arrest or publicity to demand money or bank details.
  5. The money is taken by transfer or crypto and is very hard to get back.

What to do

  1. Don't open the attached file, don't reply and don't answer any questions. Police do not work like this.
  2. Take a screenshot of the email to keep as evidence.
  3. Report it to your local police through their official website or by going to a police station, and tell them it is a fake police email.
  4. Tell your family and friends so they are warned about this fake police email.
