What happens

Scammers create fake voting pages that ask for a phone number and a WhatsApp linking code. Sharing the code lets them take over the victim's WhatsApp account and contact their friends.

Warning signs

  • Asks for WhatsApp linking code The page tells you to copy a code and enter it in WhatsApp's 'Link with phone number' option, which gives the sender control of your WhatsApp account.
  • Unusual web address The address is votefibs.online with a long string of code after it, which is not a clearly official school or voting address.
  • Phone number needed to vote A real vote does not need your phone number linked to WhatsApp to confirm, and you are asked to hand over a code to 'complete' it.
  • Pressure to act quickly The page says you must finish verification now to complete your vote, which pushes you to act without thinking.
  • Odd wording and layout The page mixes a formal header with a generic 'Enter your phone number to confirm' box and a copy button, a typical look for a fake page.

How this scam works

  1. You are sent or find a page that looks like an official voting or verification step.
  2. The page asks for your phone number and shows a code that seems to be part of the process.
  3. You are told to enter that code in WhatsApp's 'Link a Device' option.
  4. The code links the scammer's device to your WhatsApp account.
  5. The scammer now reads your messages and pretends to be you to ask your contacts for money or codes.

What to do

  1. Don't type your phone number or any code on this page. Close it.
  2. Don't copy the code and don't open WhatsApp to link anything.
  3. Take a screenshot of this page so you have proof.
  4. Tell the school or voting organisation about it, using the contact details on their official website or app, not the link you were sent.
