Scam · pretends to be Telegram (fake Telegram service notification)
Fake Telegram account-block message with security check button
The real message, with personal details covered.
What happens
Criminals create fake Telegram channels that post official-looking 'system messages' saying the account is blocked. The victim is pushed to a fake security check to steal login details.
Warning signs
- Fake urgent account block It says your account is blocked and will be restricted or shut down unless you act within 12 hours.
- Button to a 'security check' The red and blue 'Drošības verifikācija' buttons push you to a security check, which is how criminals steal logins.
- Not a real Telegram channel Real Telegram messages do not come from a public channel with a name like 'pakalpojuma paziņojums' and only 20 subscribers.
- Vague accusation with no details It claims you broke rules or joined banned groups but gives no specific reason, date or way to appeal.
- Pressure and fear Words like 'restricted', 'blocked' and 'time limit' are designed to make you act without thinking.
- Pinned to look official The message is pinned at the top of the channel so it looks important and official.
How this scam works
- You join a channel or group that looks like an official service, often after a link in another chat or an advert.
- The channel posts a fake 'system message' saying your account is blocked or restricted.
- A red button sends you to a fake 'security check' page that looks like a login screen.
- The page asks for your phone number, login code or password, which the criminals then use to take over your account.
- With control of your account, criminals can contact your friends or family for money or steal other data.
What to do
- Do not tap the red or blue button, and do not reply to the message.
- Take a screenshot of the message so you have proof.
- Report the channel and the message to Telegram using the report option in the app, and tell Telegram it is pretending to be Telegram.
- Tell your family and friends about it so they do not fall for it too.
