What happens

Scammers send emails that look like Spotify billing notices, saying a payment failed. The button in the email leads to a fake page that tries to steal payment and login details.

Warning signs

  • Fake payment failure warning The email says your Spotify payment failed and pushes you to fix it straight away, a classic way to rush you into a mistake.
  • Button asks you to pay The big green 'Retry Payment' button is there to send you to a page that asks for your bank or card details.
  • Vague sender name It is signed only 'Assistance team.' with no real Spotify name or clear sender address shown.
  • Spelling mistakes The title says 'mounthly' and has double full stops ('Failed..'), which real companies rarely make.
  • Generic greeting It does not address you by name and only uses a general message about 'your account', which is typical of mass scam emails.

How this scam works

  1. You receive an email that looks like a real company bill, warning that a payment has failed.
  2. The email rushes you with a button that says to fix it straight away.
  3. The button leads to a fake page copying the company's look, which asks for your name, card or bank details.
  4. The criminals use your details to steal money or to sell your information to other fraudsters.
  5. Sometimes they also ask for one-time codes sent to your phone, to get into your real account.

What to do

  1. Don't click 'Retry Payment' and don't reply to this email.
  2. Take a screenshot of the email and keep it.
  3. Report it to Spotify through its official app or website, not by using this email.
  4. If you typed in any card or bank details, call your bank now and report it to your local police.
