What happens

A sponsored social media advert uses the IKEA name and a shop photo to claim a store is closing with up to 90% off. It leads to a fake shop that steals card details or takes payment for goods that never arrive.

Warning signs

  • Unknown advertiser name The advert is paid for by 'Seakirin', which is not IKEA, yet it uses the IKEA name and shop picture.
  • Too-good-to-be-true discount 'Up to 90% off' is far bigger than any real IKEA sale and is used to tempt you quickly.
  • Fake 'store closing' panic Real IKEA stores do not announce closing sales through odd sponsored adverts like this.
  • Alarm emojis and pressure The siren and angry face symbols are used to make you hurry and not think.
  • Picture looks artificial The shop image looks computer-made and tidy, like a stock or AI picture, not a real sale notice.
  • Paid advert with arrow link It is a sponsored advert that sends you off to an unknown website outside IKEA.

How this scam works

  1. Scammers pay for adverts that copy a famous brand and promise huge discounts.
  2. You click and arrive at a fake shop that looks real, with very low prices.
  3. You order and enter your name, address and card details.
  4. The scammers keep your money and send nothing, or send cheap rubbish.
  5. They may also use your card details to take more money or sell them to other criminals.

What to do

  1. Don't click the advert, and don't buy anything or type in card details.
  2. Take a screenshot to keep as proof, then report the advert using the three dots on it and choose to report it as a scam.
  3. Tell IKEA about it through their official website or app so they can warn others.
  4. Tell your family and friends so they don't get caught by the same advert.
